Reimaging Xianity in the wake of Modernism's passing
The Seven Stanzas of the Johannine Prologue
The Word With God In the beginning was the Word And the Word was with God And the Word was God He Was in the beginning with God
The Word and Creation All things came into being through him, And without him nothing came into being. What came to be in him was life And the life was the light of humanity.
The Word in the World The light shines in the darkness, And the darkness has not overcome it. The true light Which enlightens every person, Was coming into the world.
The Rejection of the Word in Israel’s History He was in the world, And the world came to being through him, but the world did not know him. He came to his own, But his own did not receive him.
The Reception of the Word in Israel’s History But to as many received him, He gave authority To become children of God. To those who believed in his name. Those not of blood Neither of the will of flesh Nor the will of man But born of God.
The Community’s Experience of the Incarnate Word And the Word became flesh And tented among us, And we have beheld his glory, Glory as an only begotten from the Father, Full of grace and truth.
The Community’s Reception of Grace through Jesus Christ For out of his fullness We are all received, Even grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses, Grace and truth Came through Jesus Christ.
Yesterday, I highlighted an article which suggested that the Prologue of John was a Didactic Hymn. Above is the Prologue in hymnic form.
