Students and Their Violinist.
I asked my students yesterday if they would remained hooked up to a violinist for five months if they were hooked up to them without their consent. Here are some of their answers:
The vast majority of them said they absolutely would remain hooked up to the violinist. A few said that while they had no moral imperative to stay hooked up to the violinist, they would choose to remain anyway.
A much smaller group of students said that the violinists could make no claims up on their bodies.
Here is the breakdown:
| % of Class |
Position |
| 85% |
Morally obligated to remain hooked Up |
| 10% |
Not obligated, but would remain hooked up |
| 5% |
Not obligated to remain hooked up |
All of this, of course, is a prelude to Judith Jarvis Thomson’s article on the morality of abortion. It will be interesting to see how student’ views change after reading that article.
